Jeffrey Daniel did it years before Jackson and taught Jackson the moonwalk or backslide as he called it. Although there's movie footage of it being done as far back as the forties.

Jeffrey was the first person I ever saw do the Moonwalk on American Bandstand. It blew my mind! By the way, it was years before I saw MJ do it. I think the moonwalk originally came from roller skating.

MJ was very good, but JD was the Master, he had seemingly effortless and superior muscle control, consumate grace and natural elegance. The impact he created with his on-the-fly dance routine with Shalimar in the UK on TOTP in 1982 has never been equalled IMO. It was a serious discussion point in schools, the streets and youth clubs forever, back in the day those who saw it never forgot it.

Don't see a problem. MJ took from the best and combined with songwriting and performance in a way that no one else could have done. He basically built on others, like everyone else, but took it to the next level.
What I see, is a purity and rawness in Jeffrey's style. His talent was unpolished and unrefined back then. MJ takes the best of what Jeffrey does and adds it to a bunch of other stuff he likes and then refines the final result.

The first time Michael saw someone do the backslide was in a show in Las Vegas a Cher show one of the dancers Damita Joe Freeman who was a Soul Train dancer was on the show and did it. Michael went backstage to ask her to teach him ..she saw it on a PBS special from old B&W footage...then Jeffrey Daniel showed him.
Never seen this footage of daniels,He's a BEAST!!!! His movements are soooo FLUID and SMOOTH!!!! His moonwalk is KILLA!!!
